Romate Amontillado

Romate Amontillado, has intense nutty aromas on the nose and a slight sweet refined palate this shows all the characteristics of an exceptional Amontillado

In 1781 the Sanchez Romate Sherry house laid down its firm’s Solera in Jerez de la Frontera, the hottest part of the Sherry country.

The town of Jerez doesn’t have the influence of the maritime breezes, and the warmer climate affects the ageing process of the wines. With this in mind we’ve selected a range of wines that benefit from greater complexity and richness.

Sherry is an Anglicisation of Jerez, the central town in the south-west corner of Spain. In it’s time it has been invaded by Ottomans, Romans, Huns and the Moors.

While these left some splendid architectural traces and pretty ceramic tile work, 400 years or British merchant dominance has celebrated, entrenched and refined the production of the diverse group of lightly fortified wines which today we call “sherry”.

Sherries come in sweet and dry, rich and elegant styles.

They’re made from both brown and predominantly white grapes.

But what they all share is an extended period of barrel maturation (4 years minimum for decent wines) in a solera system, and fortification with three or more degrees of clean, neutral alcohol.

Sanchéz Romate was founded in the late 18th century by Juan Sánchez de la Torre, and today is one of the few D.O. Jerez wineries to still be in the hands of local owners.

Over time the winery has grown and adapted to modernisation and technology, whilst maintaining their respect for traditional viticulture and Sherry production.

Each year, our vineyards receive roughly 3,000 hours of sunshine, accompanied by relatively heavy rainfalls of about 600 l/ m². http://www.lustau.es/en/vines

The land scape of the area consists primarily of white limestone hills, known as “albariza.” Its richness is due to the fact that the region was under water thousands of years ago. To a lesser extent, areas of mud and sand appear near the coastal regions.

Lustau has two vineyards in the Jerez region:

-Montegilillo Vineyard. From its “albariza” white limestones oils,we obtain the Palomino grapes from which Manzanillas, Finos, Amontillados and Olorosos are produced.

-Las Cruces Vineyard. Near the coast. In its sandys oils, we grow Muscatel and Pedro Ximénez grapes intended for the production of sweet wines.

This has a nut-brown colour and oxidised, nutty nose, with a hint of chocolate and more raisiny fruit. Fonseca Terra Prima

Silky-smooth aromas of crushed red berry fruits and chocolate with little herbal nuances. On the palate that herbal quality is still there but some pure, velvety, cherry and plum fruit fills in nicely, the subtle sweetness developing but staying balanced by a certain acidity and a fairly nimble, lighter-bodied character. A spicy finish too in a style that is not heavy and very sippable. 89/100 Tom Cannavan, www.wine-pages.com

Mas Amiel Maury Vintage Rouge 2019

Mas Amiel Maury Vintage Rouge is made in the same style as the rimage wines of Banyuls. From 100% Grenache Noir grown on the southfacing broken schists and marne soils and yields of 25 hl/ha, the grapes are subsequently sorted, destemmed and vinified in the normal way. The alcohol is added while the wine is still in the vat (mutage sur les grains), which slows down the final fermentation, allowing a longer period of maceration and thereby conferring greater richness. This Maury is ruby with violet tints and the nose eloquently expresses framboise, cherry and crème-de-cassis. It is smooth in the mouth, the red fruits reinforced by bitter chocolate and spice as well as fine tannins. 0.75l bottle. This fleshy, yet refreshing, fruity wine is a perfect match for red fruit or chocolate desserts. It is a seductive, pure Grenache varietal that also pairs well with sweet and sour dishes.
