Description
Some Young Punks Passion Has Red Lips
In Some Young Punks Passion Has Red Lips the Cabernet provides the acidity and elongated tannin allowing, giving the supple Shiraz shape and structure. There’s lovely fleshy fruit that floods the mouth and glides across the palate. Then there’s excellent, cool, fresh acidity and tannins balancing the wines sweet fruit. A precise and astute Passion with plenty of oomph.
This juicy McLaren Vale red is sourced from 8 core vineyards and is a blend of three-quarters Shiraz and one-quarter Cabernet.
Col McBryde and Jen Gardner (of Adelina Wines) got together with good friend Nic Bourke in 2006 to establish the Some Young Punks label. The first release, Passion has Red Lips, had a label based on an early 1900s Pulp Fiction novel. It was one of the most striking labels we’d seen for some time.
With their punk attitude to winemaking, Colin McBryde, Jen Gardner and Nic Bourke make wines with charisma and attitude. “Each time we make a wine”, they say, “it may be the last wine we make – and if it isn’t worthy of being the last then it will never wear the Some Young Punks name.”
Their contemporary approach means minimal use of oak and short ferments to retain maximum punchy vibrancy. Famous for their striking pop art labels, the punks were on the front of the packaging revolution in Australia and always thought differently about how to package their wines. The trio believe it’s okay to judge these books by their covers, which are as bright and bold as the wines they clothe.
Despite the humour and fun reflected by these labels, the Adelina team is deadly serious when it comes to their wines. The small scale production is traditional and minimalist with hand-picking in small lots, indigenous yeast fermentations, basket pressing and no filtration.
