Spier 21 Gables Chenin Blanc

Spier 21 Gables Chenin Blanc is a rich and complex wooded Chenin Blanc with soft aromas of dried apricots with an oak and vanilla undertow on the nose. White fleshed peaches, almond paste and windfall oranges on the palate.

Grapes were hand-harvested in 10kg lug boxes and pre-cooled beforehand sorting, destemming and crushing. Skin contact was limited to 4 hours and the free run juice drained off to settle overnight before inoculation. The fermentation took place in 400 litre barrels. The wine matured for 14 months in French barrels: 46% new and 54% second fill.
Established in 1692, Spier is one of South Africa’s most historic wine farms – with a long, proud legacy. Today, their farm represents a modern, conscious energy. Focused on art and healthy living, Spier is about farm-to-table food and award-winning wines; and people sharing ideas for living, working and growing in forward-thinking ways.
It was in 1692 that Spier’s first owner, a German settler by the name of Arnout Janz, took possession of the land in Stellenbosch, South Africa, he soon realised the potential for winegrowing and set out to plant the first vines.

In 1712 the first grapes were pressed on the farm and today one of the Cape’s oldest wine cellar buildings dating back to 1767, still takes pride of place on the estate.

Their range of blends is inspired by an art project that combines works from different artists to create something new.

Similarly, they blend grapes from various vineyard blocks to create wines far greater than the sum of their parts. The number on the bottle refers to the number of varietals used to create each bottle of wine.

Animals, including cattle and chickens, are raised on pastures, and contribute to the fertility of the soil.

The ethically produced meat and vegetables are used in their farm-to-table eating experiences Eight and Eight to Go in the preparation of wholesome, delicious dishes and picnics.
They strive to maintain the biodiversity of their farm by balancing vineyard cultivation and food production with the planting of indigenous shrubs and trees, and large conservation areas are currently being established.
In fact, it was one of the very first farms to be established in Stellenbosch in 1692, its rich cultural heritage includes a restored Manor House, an impressive collection of Cape Dutch gables (21 in fact) and the oldest dated wine cellar in the country.

Domaine des Ballandors Quincy 2019

This is the village adjacent to Sancerre and Pouilly Fume where wines of similar style are made but because of Quincy’s ‘lesser’ name at much reduced cost. This wine is a testament to that; the flavours and aromas achieved in this wine are equivalent to any top flight Sancerre, with ‘grippy’ edgy grapefruit notes and steely crisp fruit. Domaine Patrick Vauvy Touraine Sauvignon Blanc 2019

Attractively aromatic, rich dry Sauvignon showing the fruit character of fully ripe grapes. Exotic fruits in abundance on the nose and just a hint of mint. On the palate its fresh and tangy and the finish is fruity and moreish. The obvious accompaniment to asparagus with hollandaise but should be tried with goats cheese and works well with tuna dishes.

A rather restrained nose of fresh apricot and white stone fruit develops into youthful lime perfumes. On the palate, the Loimer Riesling has a crunchy acidity and lots of texture. Light-bodied, the wine is balanced and has a medium to long finish.

This wine has a subtle, pure nose with aromas of white flowers and citrus fruits. The taste is racy and crystalline, clear with a citrus fruit taste initially followed by a saline and mineral finish. Nothing overly exuberant: just clarity and precision.
