Description
St George Terroir Gin
St George Terroir Gin is forest-driven and earthy, Terroir is a profoundly aromatic gin with a real sense of place. They wanted to make a spirit that conveyed what they loved about the monumental groves of trees, moist and misty glens, and sun-baked chaparral of their favorite local parklands.
With Terroir Gin, they try to take you there with Douglas fir, California bay laurel, coastal sage, and other evocative botanicals. Sip it and be transported.
Wildcrafted local Douglas fir and California bay laurel form Terroir’s aromatic signature—and 10 more botanicals help complete the picture.
Terroir is a forest in your glass—with ultra woodsy notes of Douglas fir, California bay laurel, sage, and a hint of citrus.
Since St. George Spirits was founded in 1982, they’ve grown from a dedicated eau de vie distillery into a diverse operation that makes a range of craft spirits.
They’ve grown slowly over the last 35 years, hiring one person at a time, adding one copper still at a time. They don’t have a marketing team or a big advertising budget. What they do have are passion, ideas, and access to superlative raw materials.
When Jörg founded St. George Spirits in 1982, he laid the groundwork for the modern American artisan distillation movement. At the time, he was new to the United States, having come to this country as Germany’s youngest judge on assignment from the Ministry of Culture. He fell in love with the Bay Area’s nascent food culture and its embrace of top-quality raw materials, which resonated with what he already knew from his family’s generations of distilling in the Black Forest.
Inspired by the spectacular quality of fruit growing in California orchards, Jörg began making eau de vie from pears, raspberries, cherries, and even kiwi fruit on a single, 65-gallon Holstein pot still. At the time, few Americans knew what eau de vie was and there was no craft distillation movement in the United States to speak of. But the quality of Jörg’s distillates and his commitment to his craft earned him followers and supporters—including Julia Child, who wrote him with words of encouragement about what she described as his “newsworthy” endeavors.
