Taylor’s Vintage 1985

Taylor’s Vintage 1985, is a deep ruby, purple inky colour, powerful ripe berry fruit aromas, excellent balance and complexity.

Taylor’s Vintage 1985 has a delightful fresh intensity, big, full bodied, well structured palate with superb depth and richness, a good long finish

“Intense ruby colour, now just beginning to open out. Rich, complete, multidimensional nose, displaying elements of both youth and maturity.

Aromas of ripe berry fruit, liquorice and butterscotch with scented violet notes.

The palate is now quite smooth and round with velvety well integrated tannins and masses of rich figgy fruit flavour. Warm mellow finish full of rich jammy fruit.”

Taylor’s is one of the oldest and most prestigious port producers, founded over three centuries ago in 1692 and remains an independent family owned and run business.

Its headquarters are within the ancient lodges in Oporto where their fine and rare ports reach maturity having grown up in the Douro Valley.

Best known for their elegant and long-lasting vintage ports which are among the World’s most sought after wines

The Vintage of 1985 was preceded by an exceptionally cold, wet Winter. Bud burst took place early in April and flowering around the end of May.

The Summer was hot throughout and the harvest started on 26th September. By the close of harvest it was apparent that the year had produced Port wines of exceptional quality. http://www.taylor.pt/en/

The late entertainer and cartoonist Willy Rushton visited Taylor’s Quinta de Vargellas in 1985 and drew his memorable sketches of the Taylor’s Vintage at Vargellas.

Vintage Ports mature in bottle and should be decanted to remove the natural sediment deposited by the wine and to allow the aromas developed during ageing to express themselves.

Late Bottled Vintage and Aged Tawny Ports do not need decanting as they mature in oak vats or casks, where any sediment will have settled prior to bottling.

Preparation

Have a perfectly clean decanter ready, or failing that, a clean wine bottle or jug. With the Port bottle vertical, remove the seal and wipe the top of the bottle clean.

Ease the cork out gently. You may find it easier to use a traditional waiters’ friend bottler opener – rather than one of the more modern style openers – as it will allow you more control, particularly with older vintages where the corks can be a little more delicate.

Henriques and Henriques 3 Year Old Medium Rich

This has a nut-brown colour and oxidised, nutty nose, with a hint of chocolate and more raisiny fruit. On the palate it has an intensity and sweetness that makes and immediate mark, with quite a broad mid-palate and a touch of alcoholic heat, with some caramel and fruity flavours, with a fine acid structure that is beautifully fresh and crisp in the finish.

Fonseca Terra Prima

Silky-smooth aromas of crushed red berry fruits and chocolate with little herbal nuances. On the palate that herbal quality is still there but some pure, velvety, cherry and plum fruit fills in nicely, the subtle sweetness developing but staying balanced by a certain acidity and a fairly nimble, lighter-bodied character. A spicy finish too in a style that is not heavy and very sippable. 89/100 Tom Cannavan, www.wine-pages.com
