The Crossings Sauvignon Blanc

The Crossings Sauvignon Blanc is bright with a fresh softly green hue, this wine has subtle yet exotic notes of white peach and pink grapefruit, compliment gooseberry and passion fruit aromas.

On the palate The Crossings Sauvignon Blanc has lifted stone fruit and citrus is framed by a finely textured palate and zesty acidity with a classic Awatere flinty mineral background. Food pairings – baked whole fish, couscous and fresh tasty salads.

The Crossings Sauvignon Blanc : The Crossings vineyards were planted amongst the first in the Awatere Valley allowing pick of the best sites.

The 143 ha estate is planted in three distinctive vineyards, each on alluvial river terraces, on the northern bank of the Awatere River.

The Crossings wines are grown and crafted in the Awatere Valley, Marlborough, New Zealand.

Although the rugged, unspoiled Awatere Valley is not a place for the faint-hearted, its harsh conditions bring rare rewards for winegrowers… and people who enjoy wine that goes beyond the usual.

And even within the Awatere Valley, The Crossings vineyards are something special.

The Awatere Valley is the southernmost, coolest and driest of the three Marlborough winegrowing sub-regions.

The Awatere Valley lies to the south of the Wither Hills, between the Black Birch Range and Inland Kaikoura Range, with the cool water of Clifford Bay to the east.

Gouged out by ancient glaciers, the Awatere Valley has lots of rock debris and a rich diversity of soil structures. These vary from alluvial stony deposits close to the Awatere River, to glacial outwash soils and the distinctive grey clay and limestone mix known as Grey Marl.  http://www.thecrossings.co.nz/pages/crossings/sustainability

The climate in the Awatere Valley tends to be more extreme than other parts of Marlborough. The region is battered by strong winds, it is significantly drier and temperatures are generally lower.

The diurnal temperature variation in the Awatere Valley tends to be more extreme too, with very hot days followed by cold nights. This effect is most pronounced at sites further from the coast.

Despite these challenges, adventurous winegrowers started growing grapes in the Awatere Valley in the late 1980s.

The soil types and weather in the Awatere Valley conspire to slow down the ripening of grapes grown here, creating even more intense fruit flavours and fresher, crisper acids than elsewhere in Marlborough.

You can taste these qualities in wines grown on The Crossings vineyards.

At The Crossings, we love what we do. We love our wine and we love the land that helps us make it. So we’re doing everything we can to make sure we can keep making wine here indefinitely. That is why we practice sustainable winegrowing.

We make sure that nothing we do now will have an effect that will detract from our land or wine in future.

All three our vineyards are fully accredited through the Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand programme.

This New Zealand wine industry initiative was established in 1995 to promote best practice in activities such as water usage, energy consumption, waste management and biodiversity.

Domaine des Ballandors Quincy 2019

This is the village adjacent to Sancerre and Pouilly Fume where wines of similar style are made but because of Quincy’s ‘lesser’ name at much reduced cost. This wine is a testament to that; the flavours and aromas achieved in this wine are equivalent to any top flight Sancerre, with ‘grippy’ edgy grapefruit notes and steely crisp fruit. When Anton Beukes, winemaker at the Môreson Winery in South Africa, tasted this wine at supper, he said; ‘This is the wine I would love to make’ - Anton makes some very serious wines, so what an accolade! Domaine des Brosses Sancerre 2019

The Girard family have 6 different parcels of Sancerre vineyards. Their hillside vineyards are located on classic clay and chalk soils, giving the grippy, mineral style expected of true Sancerre. Domaine des Brosses has used a machine harvester to collect the grapes since 1989. This is so that the Sauvignon Blanc is brought to the winery in the coolness of night-time, thus retaining the classic citrus and gooseberry aromas and flavours of Sancerre. Pale yellow in colour. The nose is fresh and full of hay, citrus and mineral notes. The palate is medium in body with crisp lemon acidity and an appealing creamy complexity alongside the ripe peach, elderflower and mineral flavours which last well on the long finish.
