The Drift Farm Year of the Rooster Rose

The Drift Farm Year of the Rooster Rose is about celebrating the outdoor, sun filled lifestyle. Each vintage is slightly different, reflecting mostly the different growing season weather, but also to a lesser extent the winter weather – cold units and winter rainfall affect budburst and initial growth. Light pink colour, with an intriguing floral nose of nectarines and strawberries. The palate is awash with spring blossoms and cherry, with just a hint of blackberry tannin. It is deliciously creamy, but bone dry.

The Drift Farm Year of the Rooster Rose is a no compromise, seriously dry, 007 type wine. It is made from a single vineyard Touriga Franca – a suitably unusual varietal for a remarkable Rosé. Vineyards are planted high up on the side of a windswept, granite-rich, fynbos-festooned mountainside. Some call this obsessive Rosé madness. They call it, incredibly delicious, authentic wine made to intrigue the romantics and the restless alike. They only make 4 barrels a year. Enjoy only with close friends and loved ones.

Driven by a desire to make individual, superb quality wines with exceptional character The Drift wines are assiduously crafted by winemaker Bruce Jack using only the grapes grown on the farm. The Drift specializes in four wines – a single vineyard Rosé, a single vineyard Pinot Noir, a single vineyard Barbera and a blended red wine from various varieties and vineyard sites on the farm. Chief Winemaker and Farmer Bruce Jack grew up in Cape Town, the son of an architect and a musician/writer, so perhaps it was inevitable he would become a winemaker. The Drift is a founding member of the Premium Independent Wineries of South Africa (PIWOSA), a collective of small yield winemakers working together to promote their hand crafted vintages to International markets.

This is a tiny vineyard – less than a third of an hectare. Planted at around 450 metres above sea level on the side of the mountain, the block slopes quite gently down to the dam and faces north. The soil is a unique mixture of decomposed Table Mountain sandstone and iron rock over ancient shale and clay. The vines are trained to an adapted VSP (vertical shoot positioning).

The grapes are hand selected and picked into small 20kg lug boxes (yellow, so they don’t absorb the heat). After a final bunch selection the grapes are destemmed and pressed, and the juice allowed to ferment in very old barrels with wild yeasts. the wood imparts no flavour, just adds to the creamy mouthfeel.
