Vale da Capucha is a family enterprise, based at Quinta de S. José in Torres Vedras, and has gradually become a success story in the Lisbon Wine Region.
The estate, covering a total of 20 hectares, currently has 13 hectares under vine, with the first replanting of new grape varieties taking place in 2007 and its first wine – Pynga Selection Viognier & Alvarinho – released in 2009.
Above and beyond the wine itself, the homestead has been prepared with the objective of developing Vale da Capucha culturally.
The soils are clay-limestone of oceanic origin. This is really important for the huge minerality of white wines, like this Vale da Capucha Branco Blend.
The fossils found in the soil inspire the Fossil brand identity through their direct association to the sea and to this rich past.
The Vale da Capucha is a family run winery, and for almost two centuries have been the benchmark of success in the wine industry in the region.
The ancient lioz limestone winepress and the winery, both dating back to 1858, are currently being converted into two private rooms, which will available for events and put to use at the service of the region.
The aim is to transform this infrastructure into a welcoming environment in which to hold tertulias, wine lunches and dinners, workshops and training courses and displays of regional produce, amongst other events.
Also contemplated in the project is the development of an educational farm, prepared to receive visitors from both public and private educational institutions, a dynamic contribution to the extracurricular education of Portuguese youngsters.
With an eye on the future, the conversion of Vale da Capucha to an Organic Production System got underway in 2011.
This operational conversion involves the adoption of environmentally-friendly agricultural and winemaking techniques and should enable us to produce Certified Organic Wine, thus assuring our headway into new and demanding markets.
