Vinedos de Alcohuaz Rhu

Vinedos de Alcohuaz Rhu has a complex nose with meaty notes from the Syrah, and an ashy mineral character muddled with dark plummy fruits and savoury hints like ripe black olives. Delicious, with lively black fruit flavours, it is creamy on the palate, with a graphite minerality,  It’s ripe fruit is in harmony with a fresh acidity due to the high altitude the grapes are grown at and a long finish.

This the second vintage of Vinedos de Alcohuaz Rhu with only 7,486 bottles produced.

A stunning and wild landscape in the heights of the Elqui valley, Viñedos Alcohuaz is one of the most ambitious altitude projects in Chile. Made of Syrah, Grenache and Petit Syrah, the grapes come from 2200m above sea level and made in a winery with all natural wine making methods – crushed by foot in stone pools and aged in cement and large wooden vats.

Viñedos Alcohuaz is a passion project of three men Patricio Flaño, an artist at heart who fell in love with the magic of Elqui and took the risk to invest in making Chile’s highest-altitude vineyards; Juan Luis Huerta, the former mayor of the town who brings the local knowledge and knows the region like the back of his hand; and renowned winemaker Marcelo Retamal of De Martino whose inquisitive nature led him to explore Elqui hunting for new wine adventures where he came across Alcohuaz, and together they are now building one of the most exciting sustainable wineries buried into the mountainsides of stargazing-territory of the Elqui Valley

At 2,200m altitude, the vines are a couple of hundred metres above the region’s highest plantations of Moscatel and Pedro Ximenez, which are grown for making into Pisco, Chile’s brandy, which takes its name from the town of Pisco, located at 1,300m in Elquí – a little further down the valley from Alcohuaz.
