Volnay 1er Cru Champans Domaine Francois Buffet

Volnay 1er Cru Champans Domaine Francois Buffet 2017 has a beautiful ripe red fruit aroma, filled with plums, cherries and strawberry. On the palate, there is a slight bitterness which is balanced wonderfully by the fruit flavours and the well integrated tannins.

Pinot Noir is a thin-skinned grape which grows in small, tight bunches performs well on well-drained, deepish limestone based subsoils as are found on Burgundy’s Côte d’Or.

Domaine François Buffet is a Burgundy family-run domaine, which dates back to 1692, and is currently managed by Marc-Olivier, son of François, though still with help from his parents. The family had a very successful negociant business, under the name Ferdinand Buffet, until the 1930s when fortunes were lost in the great crash. Even so, there is an impressive range of Volnay (Taillepieds, Clos des Chenes, Champans, Carelles, Clos de la Rougeotte) and Pommard (Rugiens, Clos Micot, Poutures) vineyards.

The estate covers an area of more than 7.5 hectares and includes 15 appellations located mainly in Volnay and Pommard as well as some beautiful parcels of Savigny-lès-Beaune and Pernand-Vergelesses. Vineyards are farmed with terroir in mind, using compost over fertilisers and leaving the vineyard ground cover to grow freely with the mind set that weeds will indicate soil deficiencies, for example clovers sprouting show a deficiency of organic matter.

NB: Picture is of the Domaine Francois Buffet Volnay, not the Premier Cru. Awaiting Volnay 1er Cru Picture.
