Willunga 100 Grenache
Willunga 100 Grenache has powerful aromatics of cherry, spice, dark plum, strawberry. Finally hints of floral greet you in the glass.
On the palate the wine is medium bodied with alluring spiciness. It has hints of raspberry and lovely savoury tannins that especially make this wine so food friendly.
At Willunga 100, they particularly take pride in making award-winning McLaren Vale wine with a focus on premium Grenache.
Willunga 100 is in McLaren Vale, south of Adelaide.
The grapes for the Willunga 100 Grenache mainly come from a range of selected vineyards in McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills. Including some over 50 years old.
The wines are made by Tim James and Kate Day. They use modern equipment alongside traditional winemaking techniques, including open-top fermenters, to ferment the small parcels of fruit arriving at the winery. Willunga 100 especially aims to produce unique and distinctive wines which capture the essence of the region.
The term “hundred” originates from late Saxon and Norman England and refers to an administrative unit of government, meaning that 100+ households had to live in the area to qualify for its place on the map. Willunga 100 select their fruit from small parcels just as the district was divided up into ‘100s’, or small lots.
After only its first vintage in 2005, wine journalist and judge James Halliday gave the winery a Five Star rating. He also named it as one of his ‘Top Ten newcomers’. This vindicated the original aim of Willunga 100, which was particularly to inject some quality and excitement into Australian wine.
Despite a few heat events and a lack of rain in January, McLaren Vale ended up having a gentle ripening period and near perfect conditions for flavour development. This was mainly due to rain and moderated temperatures in February that freshened up the vines and allowed the grapes to ripen slowly.
