Wine Exploration Box
Try the new Wine Exploration Box, carefully selected by the Hay Wines team for its customers.
If you are looking for an adventure in the fantastic world of wine, then you have just found it!
Each month our Sommeliers will put together a selection of 6 different wines made from unusual grape varieties, or coming from lesser-known and emerging wine regions of the world.
We will “virtually” take you on to a “wine exploration” of new aromas, flavours and styles from producers and appellations that are normally more difficult to find and to try.
The Wine Exploration Box for this month is composed of one each of the following:
Wine Exploration Box: the whites
1. La Piotta 2Calici Bianco (50cl), Oltrepo Pavese, Italy, £8.99 (1 bottle)
An interesting blend of Riesling, Riesling Italico and Moscato. Intense and ample bouquet with floral notes and pleasant hints of fruits. To the palate, the wine is very fresh and easy-drinking. Extremely versatile and immediate.
2. The Wolftrap White, Western Cape, South Africa, £9.99 (1 bottle)
A fabulous blended white wine. It has a striking aroma of fruit blossom mingling with spicy, baked apple aromas. The palate is equally as interesting with fresh green fruits, again with a definite spicy character. The ripeness of the vintage is clear on the finish, where a tropical note comes through.
3. Vachnadziani Krakhuna Dry White, Georgia, £12.29 (1 bottle)
Made 100% from Krakhuna grapes, cultivated in the valley of river Kvirila, in West Georgia. Concentrated citrus notes on the nose, with harmonious freshness on the palate.
Wine Exploration Box: the reds
4. Esteva Douro Tinto, Douro, Portugal, £9.99 (1 bottle)
Perfumed and intense, with floral notes of rose, spicy notes of black pepper and aromas of red fruits. It is smooth on the palate, with well-integrated acidity giving exceptional freshness and vivacity. Polished tannins support floral aromas and fresh red fruits. The finish is elegant and balanced.
5. Cuatro Pasos Mencia, Bierzo, Spain, £11.29 (1 bottle)
Morello cherry red in colour with violet reflections. The varietal aromas of red fruits dominate the bouquet with a subtle hint of vanilla from the oak toasting. The palate is elegant and balanced, with a fruit-driven finish.
6. Famille Perrin Ventoux Rouge, Rhone, France, £11.49 (1 bottle)
From the slopes of Mount Ventoux also known as the “giant of Provence” and a famous climb in the Tour de France. A nice dark ruby colour. The nose shows ripened cherry, black berries jam, spicy and leather notes. A round, fruity and ample mouth. Stewed fruit linked with liquorice and grilled aromas together with a slight minerality.
