Wine Exploration Box
Try the new Wine Exploration Box, carefully selected by the Hay Wines team for its customers.
If you are looking for an adventure in the fantastic world of wine, then you have just found it!
Each month our Sommeliers will put together a selection of 6 different wines made from unusual grape varieties, or coming from lesser-known and emerging wine regions of the world.
We will “virtually” take you to a “wine exploration” of new aromas, flavours and styles from producers and appellations that are normally more difficult to find and to try.
The Wine Exploration Box for this month is composed of one each of the following:
1. Wilder & Wilder Tabula Rasa White (50cl), South Australia, Australia, £8.99 (1 bottle)
A seasonal white that reflects the character of the vintage in a delicious, textural style. Aromas of quince, preserved lemon and barley lead through to a zesty palate of citrus, elderflower, stone fruits and almond. An informal wine, meant to be share with friends in all locations irrespective of food.
2. La Piotta Riesling Italico “Piota”, Oltrepo Pavese, Italy, £10.99 (1 bottle)
Straw yellow in colour, it has an intense bouquet with prevailing fruity and floral notes. On the palate it is soft, balanced, aromatic and long-lasting. Riesling Italico probably originates from the French region of Champagne, but its origins are still not known precisely. It is not related to the more famous German Riesling.
3. Gran Cerdo Blanco, Rioja, Spain, £10.49 (1 bottle)
Medium bodied, fruity, dry and good value natural white wine. Viura being the predominant grape, the wine is a different, fresh and great value natural wine from the Rioja region.
4. Pinha Ribeiro Santo Dao, Dao, Portugal, £9.99 (1 bottle)
Deep ruby in colour with berries aromas. Blueberries and raspberries that are moreover combined with balsamic notes and hints of underlining pine needle.
5. Tikves Cuvée Methodius Vranec, Macedonia, £9.99 (1 bottle)
A deeply coloured red wine revealing vibrant aromas of blueberries and blackberries, with hints of chocolate and cocoa. Full bodied and harmoniously balanced, with ripe, smooth tannins and juicy plum and blackberry flavours.
6. Chateau Le Roc Fronton Cuvée Classique, Fronton, France, £13.29 (1 bottle)
Medium-bodied, with notes of red berries, cherry, a hint of violet and a touch of spice. Wonderful scent of parma violets, peonies and a suggestion of marzipan, medium-bodied with red fruits, a hint of leaf and some peppery notes. Soft tannins and a bright fresh finish.
