Royal Tokaji Blue Label 5 Puttonyos
Château Royal Tokaji 5 Puttonyos is made by hand harvesting the grapes to enable the best selection of botryitis affected grapes, with the final amount of sugar measured in puttonyos.
A puttonyo is a kind of basket with an approximate capacity of 25 kg. It is used as a measure to work out the quantity noble rot clusters, which they call Aszú, and which are subsequently poured into the base wine in 136-litre barrels. At 5 Puttonyos, this wine has great sweetness which is well balanced by the flavour intensity from the fruit and the acidity, leaving a long lasting and intense taste on the palate. Flavours of cooked stone fruits, honey and quince dominate the palate, with slight floral notes and a lovely marmalade aroma.
Co-founded in 1990 by wine writer Hugh Johnson, Royal Tokaji has quickly become one of the most important wineries in Tokaj. From the outset, they focused on producing singlevineyard wines, made from the first growth vineyards of Mezes Maly, Nyulaszo, St Tamas and Betsek. Rich, complex and sumptuous, Hugh famously described Tokaj as “a wine that would make angels sing out loud in praise”.
Today, the winery’s focus is on the region’s dry styles as much as sweet, using indigenous variety Furmint to create these finely balanced wines. Just like their sweet counterparts, the dry wines have a crisp acidity, complexity and a long finish.
