Les Vignes de Eglise Merlot Grenache IGP Pays D’Oc
Since the 2009 harvest, the Vignes de L’Eglise wines have been made exclusively for Liberty Wines by Matt Thomson and his colleague Graeme Paul at the excellent Cave de Pomérols co-operative, which has 1,650 hectares and 450 growers in the Picpoul de Pinet region.
Influenced by breezes off the Mediterranean coast, the area around Pomérols is cooler than much of the Languedoc, giving the wines a purity and elegance that are hard to find at entry-level. Graeme chooses each parcel of grapes individually, based on flavour and ripeness and follows each of the ferments carefully, ensuring the flavours he identifies in the grapes are captured in the finished wines.
The grapes for this wine are planted on red clay soils around the village of Pomérols, in the Picpoul de Pinet region of the Languedoc, in the South of France. This region benefits from a sunny, warm climate which encourages ripe flavours in the wines, while the coastal breezes help retain freshness and aromatics. Clay soils encourage richness and depth in the red varieties. The grapes are harvested at night to preserve the fresh, red fruit aromas and flavours and brought to the winery around 5am.
The grapes were picked once they reached maturity at 13% potential alcohol. The grapes were macerated on skins for 10 days to give good, cherry red colour and berry flavours, then fermented at controlled temperatures of between 20-25°C which ensured that there was no over-extraction or bitterness in the wine.
Les Vignes de Eglise Merlot Grenache IGP Pays D’Oc is cherry red in colour fresh, perfumed aromas of ripe plum and berry fruits of Merlot, with cherry and red fruit of Grenache on the nose. The palate is round, with medium to full body and integrated supple tannins it is juicy, easy to drink, with a touch of spice to the long, fruit-driven finish.
