Authentic Wines and Natural Wines from Hay Wines

At Hay Wines, we pride ourselves on finding and selecting great, authentic wines. It brings us real pleasure to find these gems and present them to you. We genuinely believe these wines offer a character and flavour not available to the mass market.

What Makes Wine Authentic?

Wine is a natural product; it varies. Supermarkets, as a rule, demand consistency.

Almost by definition, authentic wines come from small producers – frequently family-owned estates. Supermarkets do sell some fine wines, but creating the volumes of a single wine required for UK supermarket distribution requires the output from significant parcels of land. The intricacies of terroir are lost.

Smaller producers do not need to create vast lakes for the mass market. So they are free to make the wines they love on the land they know intimately and exactly as they want to make them. You can taste the difference. Authentic or ‘natural wine’ tends to be made with minimal intervention in the vineyard and cellar, using methods that predate the widespread use of chemical fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides.
