Old Pulteney 12 Year Old Single Malt Whisky
Deep amber in colour, medium to high intensity and complexity. Dry with a hint of sea air. Medium bodied and smooth with a clean finish. Faintly salty with a slight sherry note.
The Old Pulteney distillery was founded in 1826 by James Hendersonld and it lies on the Southern side of Wick, it is Scotland's most Northerly mainland distillery. The town experienced a 'boom' in the 19th century thanks to the herring industry. The bay was filled with hundreds of fishing boats and at a certain point the local herring economy became so overheated that the authorities had to declare an alcohol prohibition to prevent things from running out of control. Ironically, Pulteney was still producing its whisky throughout the period of enforced abstinence.
The Henderson family remained in control until 1920 when Old Pulteney was sold and in 1930 the distillery was closed and remained inactive for 2 decades until 1951 when it was resurrected by a lawyer from Banff in Speyside.
The whisky was dubbed the 'Manzilla of the North' due to the salty character that has been picked up during the maturation.
