Belasco de Baquedano Apo Malbec
Bodega Belasco de Baquedano was founded in Mendoza by Juan Ignacio Belasco with the help of Bertrand Bourdil, the hugely talented winemaker involved in the creation of Opus One (the joint venture between Robert Mondavi and Baron Phillippe de Rothschild in California), and as the former winemaker at Château Mouton-Rothschild in Bordeaux was responsible for three 100-point wines.
Juan Ignacio and Bertrand decided to make world-class Malbec in the Alto Agrelo Valley in Luján de Cuyo in Argentina. The vineyards were planted in 1910, 1930, 1960 and newer, were planted by Juan Ignacio in 2006 at 1020 meters above sea level. Here there are outstanding natural conditions for the production of premium wines, with fine-grained sandy soil considered the best in the province. Warm days are offset by cool nights plunging by as much as 45°F - an extraordinary variance that enhances richness of wine's aroma/flavour, and deepens colour.
"Apo" is a term used by the indigenous Mapuche tribe as a tribute to the nature's elements, to the sun that shines down on them, to the rain, and to the water from the snow melting off the snow-capped Andes, all vital elements in the lifecycle of their vines.
