Cascina del Monastero Grasso Giuseppe Langhe Nebbiolo
Tasting Note
This classic Langhe Nebbiolo, made to be drunk younger than its counterparts in Barolo and Barbaresco, is a real treat. Still showing the grape's famous tannins and some bottle age, it also has a real freshness and ripe sour cherry fruit. An excellent pairing for steak or a mushroom ragout.
Producer
Once the home of Benedictine monks, the Cascina del Monastero lies at the foot of the imposing hillside cru of Annunziata, in the heart of La Morra. In 1926, Alessio Grasso, a winemaker from Treiso, bought the property and it has remained in his family ever since, with his great grandson Loris now taking the helm, ably supported by his sister Giada and his parents Giuseppe and Velda. The philosophy here is simple, to make elegant, ageworthy wines, finely structured and with the typical perfume of La Morra. Loris’ energy and enthusiasm are infectious and he is taking the wines from strength to strength, releasing them only when they have time for their tannins to soften and for their charm to show through and returning to classic, transparent, floral expressions of Nebbiolo. The 6 ha of vineyards behind the property are complemented by 3 ha in the cru of Perno in Monforte d’Alba and 3 ha in Roddino. As well as the fine Nebbiolo, a little Viognier is also planted from which a small amount of excellent Langhe Bianco is made.
