De Loach Russian River Chardonnay
De Loach Russian River Chardonnay is a beautiful pale straw yellow in colour.
The nose of this Chardonnay especially entices you with its rich aromas of key lime, white peach, and baked apple pie.
Upon the first sip, a flinty brightness balances the creamy apple.
Subtle soft oak helps carry this lovely wine with a long, lingering finish.
The Producers
The winery and vineyards were originally owned and run by the De Loach family, with Cecil De Loach as winemaker.
In 2003, the family run Burgundian estate Jean-Claude Boisset purchased De Loach.
Therefore they brought the focus back to the estate's original high quality winemaking philosophy.
Specific emphasis was on small lot winemaking, particularly of Pinot Noir from the Russian River Valley.
The winery's 17-acre estate vineyard is now 100% organic and Biodynamic®.
A tradition especially upheld by many foremost Burgundian vineyards.
The De Loach estate vineyards are certified organic by CCOF.
The appointment of consultant winemaker Greg La Follette (formerly at Flowers on the Sonoma coast) was the start of a return to their previously excellent form.
Winemaker Brian Maloney works alongside Greg in making Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Zinfandel from their own vineyards and those of similar minded growers.
Furthermore they focus on biodynamic, organic and systainable winemaking practices.
The cool, foggy Russian River Valley climate allows for slow ripening, ideal for Chardonnay to develop full flavour maturation. The fruit comes from select sites in the heart of the valley including the Boriolo and BCD vineyards, as well as from the Norris and Wallace vineyards nestled in the Chalk Hill region.
In conclusion, the fermentation takes place in a combination of stainless steel tanks (40%) and French oak barrels (60%), of which 10% were new. The barrel fermented portion of wine was aged for nine months and achieved full malolactic conversion. These techniques contributed to an intricately layered and delicately nuanced wine.
