Alvaro Palacios is not exactly a new face in the wine scene – Alvaro has helped revolutionise the Spanish wine industry by making rich, complex wines in Priorat. His first wine there, 1995 L’Ermita, gained him recognition as one of the world's most inspired and dedicated winemakers (Alvaro produces two other compelling Priorat wines Finca Dofí and Les Terrasses). He continued to make waves with his involvement in other Spanish appellations, such as Ribera del Duero and Rioja.Álvaro Palacios and his nephew Ricardo came to Bierzo in 1999. Their arrival brought much deserved attention to this old wine region and resulted in its revival.

Bierzo is a wine region in the northwest of Castilla y Leon, Spain, close to the region's borders with Galicia (to the west) and Asturias to the north. The Bierzo viticultural area consists of two parts: Bierzo Alto (high Bierzo), a mineral-rich and mountainous terrain where terraced vineyards are sewn into the slopes, and Bierzo Bajo (low Bierzo), a wide and verdant plain.

The central part (around the hill of Corullon) is a sinuous basin of worn-down hills full of ferns and honeysuckle, blue lavender, bright yellow prickled broom and other beautifully scented flowers that grow in the tertiary chalky-clay and quartzite soils. On the hillocks and slopes (which go up to 900 meters) the scattered oaks provide shelter to fields of rockrose, heather and oregano and ancient, pre-Cumbrian soils of basalt, schist and slate play home to old Mencia vines.
The sum of the Bierzo landscapes, their vegetation and diverse soils are condensed and asserted in Pétalos, a young, fragrant wine which is able to express all the hues and shades of the region.
