Greywacke Sauvignon Blanc
Greywacke Sauvignon Blanc is a potent medley of honeydew and rock melon with notes of blackcurrant intermingled with layers of delicate citrus blossom and a smoky, dill-like complexity.
A classic Marlborough vintage - Greywacke Sauvignon Blanc is showing an exotic salsa-like combination of succulent tropical fruit flavours and that hallmark herbal infusion, finishing with a zesty citrus tang.
Greywacke is the exciting solo venture of Kevin Judd, who was formerly the chief winemaker at Cloudy Bay for 25 vintages, and was instrumental in the international recognition which New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc enjoys today.
The debut wine under the Greywacke label was the 2009 vintage with his Marlborough Greywacke Sauvignon Blanc displaying the hallmarks of Kevin’s famed style: ripe fruit, fine balance, great concentration and superb varietal intensity.
"This is a delicious wine, and it is textured – rich and multi-layered, like those sheets of semi-transparent hand-made paper that have threads of wood fibre and pressed flowers in them, an effect that is achieved by fermenting in old barrels (they can come from anywhere, Judd indicates, with an uninterested shrug, “I don’t care what’s been in them, I just use 7-8 per cent new to give a tiny bit of, you know,”) and the use of wild yeast"
Greywacke Sauvignon Blanc could not be further from the shove it in a vat, get it out a few weeks later and have it in bottle and halfway around the globe ready to cash in on the supermarket shelves before the end of the British summer, accountant-pleasing sort of wine.
Fermentation goes on for pretty much a year, taking a couple of weeks to get going, then pausing for the winter as the temperature drops.
