Tasting Note

Perfumed and bursting with red fruit flavours such as raspberry, ripe strawberry, sour cherry and pomegranate seeds. Careful use of oak adds subtle sweet spice and warmth.

Post fermentation the wines are pressed to tank and allowed to settle before being racked off into French oak barrels of which about 25% are new each year. The wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in barrels with regular monitoring and tasting to evaluate each parcel’s attributes. After an aging period in oak of about 8 months, the wine is taken out of barrels and the final blend is created.

Producer

Josef Chromy is a passionate advocate for the Tasmanian food and wine landscape. While his journey began with ventures into renowned wineries, it’s at his own estate where his commitment to his adopted country truly shines. Though Joe’s remarkable journey commenced as a 19-year-old fleeing war-ravaged Czechoslovakia, his legacy is deeply
rooted in the Tasmanian soil. Having founded several high-profile wineries over his decades-long career, he then went on to found Chromy Wines in 2007, a culmination of his experience in the region. It is his testament to his unwavering dedication to the Tasmanian
land and its people.

The 61 hectare vineyard, set in the cool climes of the Tamar Valley, yields wines of unmatched quality, reflecting a true sense of place. Situated at the heart of Relbia, just south of Launceston, Josef Chromy Wines represents the pinnacle of innovative winemaking. The state-of-the art facility houses advanced equipment ensuring every grape is treated with utmost care. The portfolio is defined by flagship varieties including Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling.  Winemaking is now in the hands of Yael Sandler, who joined the Chromy team for the 2016 vintage. With a masters degree in Oenology, she went on to hone her skills at some of the finest wineries across the globe before returning to Tasmania and to Chromy in 2020.
Sustainability is deeply ingrained in every step at Josef Chromy.  In the winery, initiatives like a 100kW solar power system, advanced wastewater treatment, and extensive composting practices allow the team to strive towards the best practices in sustainable wine production as set out by Sustainable Winegrowing Australia (SWA). With the recent purchase of the 17 hectare vineyard in the Coal Valley in southern Tasmania, Josef Chromy Wines has broadened its diversity and with a commitment to quality and respect for the
land, Josef Chromy Wines continues to set benchmarks in cool climate winemaking.
