The Natural Wine Discovery Case
Six Wines, Six Different Expressions of Natural Winemaking
Curious about natural wine but not quite sure where to start? Or perhaps you've already dipped your toes into the world of low intervention winemaking and fancy exploring a little further?
Our Natural Wine Discovery Case brings together six carefully selected bottles from some of the world's most interesting wine regions. From sparkling wine made without added sulphites to expressive orange wines and characterful reds, this mixed case offers a fascinating introduction to the diversity of natural winemaking.
Forget the idea that natural wine has to be cloudy, funky or taste like something that escaped from a science experiment. Natural wines can be fresh, elegant, complex, structured and, most importantly, delicious.
We've chosen six wines that demonstrate just how varied this approach to winemaking can be.
What's Inside the Natural Wine Discovery Case?
Each case contains six bottles, one of each wine listed below.
1. Domaine Klur Crémant d'Alsace Sans Soufre
France | Alsace | Sparkling Wine
An elegant sparkling wine from Alsace, produced using organic and biodynamic practices without the addition of sulphites. Made using the traditional method, this Crémant offers freshness, delicate bubbles and an expressive character. A brilliant example of how minimal intervention winemaking can produce refined sparkling wines without sacrificing precision or balance.
2. Fabrizio Vella Bianco Organico
Italy | Sicily | White Wine
Made from Sicily's indigenous Catarratto grape, this organic white wine captures the sunny Mediterranean character of the island. Fresh, approachable and full of personality, it combines citrus and orchard fruit notes with a subtle savoury edge. A great introduction to the more accessible side of natural and low intervention white wines.
3. Zephyr Agent Orange
New Zealand | Marlborough | Orange Wine
A distinctive skin contact white wine from Marlborough, demonstrating one of the most fascinating techniques associated with natural winemaking. By allowing white grapes to spend time in contact with their skins, the wine develops additional texture, aromatic complexity and a beautiful amber hue. Expect an intriguing combination of fruit, gentle tannins and a pleasantly savoury finish.
4. A Los Vinateros Bravos Volcanico Pais
Chile | Itata Valley | Red Wine
Produced from the historic País grape, this vibrant Chilean red celebrates old vines, traditional winemaking and the distinctive character of the Itata Valley. Light on its feet yet full of personality, it offers bright red fruit, freshness and an earthy complexity. A wonderful example of how natural winemaking can help preserve the identity of traditional grape varieties and their origins.
5. Cortem Tinto
Portugal | Alentejo | Red Wine
A characterful Portuguese red produced with a philosophy of minimal intervention and respect for the vineyard. Combining ripe fruit with savoury complexity and a distinctive sense of place, Cortem Tinto offers a fascinating expression of Portugal's increasingly exciting natural wine movement. Generous yet balanced, it demonstrates that natural wines can also deliver depth and structure.
6. Fatalone Primitivo Riserva Gioia del Colle
Italy | Puglia | Red Wine
A beautifully expressive Primitivo from Gioia del Colle, produced by a family estate renowned for its commitment to organic farming and traditional winemaking. Rich and structured, with layers of dark fruit, spice and earthy complexity, this wine challenges the assumption that natural and low intervention wines must always be light or unconventional. A fitting finale to our discovery case.
What Exactly Is Natural Wine?
Natural wine is a term generally used to describe wines produced with minimal intervention, both in the vineyard and in the cellar. While there is no universally accepted legal definition, the philosophy typically involves organic or biodynamic farming, spontaneous fermentation and limited use of additives or processing techniques.
However, natural wine is not a guarantee of quality, nor does it automatically mean a wine is healthier, better or completely free from sulphites.
That's precisely why we've created this mixed case: to explore the subject through six different wines rather than relying on labels or fashionable terminology.
Discover More: Natural Wine Explained
We've created this selection to accompany our latest Hay Wines blog article, Natural Wine Explained: What It Means and Whether It's Worth Trying, written by our own Sommelier and Italian Wine Ambassador, Michele Longari.
The article explores what makes a wine natural, how it differs from organic and biodynamic wine, the role of sulphites and whether natural wines really deserve their growing popularity.
Whether you're completely new to the category or simply curious to understand the philosophy behind it, we recommend giving it a read before opening your first bottle.
Think of the article as the theory and this case as the practical lesson. Fortunately, there's no exam at the end.
