West Midlands Distillery Siblings Unpeated Single Malt Whisky

Siblings takes its name from the brother-and-sister founders of WMD. To tell that story in whisky, two closely matched first-fill ex-bourbon casks from Oz Tyler were selected as a pair - sibling casks with the same origin, then given two very different lives.

Both casks were brought to England and recoupered down to approximately 100 litres. The smaller format increases the spirit's interaction with the oak, allowing the first-fill bourbon character to become a defining part of both whiskies.

Before filling, one cask was peat-smoked. The other was left untouched. The result is a yin-and-yang release: unmistakably related, but dramatically different in personality

WMD works with Warminster Maltings because of its traditional approach, including hand-turned malt and its connection with heritage grains. A peated malt option is not part of that chosen route, so WMD approached smoke from a different direction: the maturation vessel.

Smoking the oak before filling lets peat smoke become part of the cask influence rather than part of the malt specification. It creates an intensely smoky profile while using considerably less peat than a conventional barley-smoking process. For WMD, that combination of flavour, experimentation and resource efficiency made the technique a natural fit.
