Why Pair Wine With BBQ?

Barbecued food offers bold, smoky flavours that make it perfect for pairing with wine. Grilling caramelises proteins and vegetables, adding depth and complexity to your dishes. Choosing the right wine enhances these flavours and elevates your summer dining. Look to pair certain flavour notes with the BBQ you're cooking at the grill, such as:

·       Rich, Fatty Meats: Choose wines with good acidity and firm tannins. These cleanse the palate and balance the richness of grilled meats like ribs or thick-cut chops.

·       Spicy Rubs and Sauces: Opt for wines with a hint of sweetness. This cools the heat and complements bolder, spicier flavours.

·       Charred Flavours: Pair with earthy reds or smoky whites. These wines mirror the grilled aromas of your dish and create a seamless match.

How to Choose the Best Wines for Barbecue in August

The warm weather that much of the UK enjoys in August calls for wines that refresh and invigorate. Make the most of the summer with outdoor dining that calls for lighter reds, sweeter whites, and delicate rosés. Chilling your wines will be essential, but keep an eye on what wines require cooler temperatures. Whites and rosés should be well-chilled to enhance their brightness, whilst reds benefit from slight cooling that emphasises their character. Rosé wines deserve special mention for their versatility at BBQs. Its intense fruit flavours and crisp finish complement classic dishes such as grilled salmon and lamb. The wine's beautiful colour also adds visual appeal to any al fresco meal.

Wine for Grilled Meats

Grilled meats require bold wines to create the perfect summer pairing. BBQ's smoky, rich flavours call for wines with strong character that can complement each bite. From beef steaks to juicy chicken, choosing the right wine will elevate every barbecue dish. Here's a simple guide to the best wines for barbecue meats:

·       Zinfandel: Bold and peppery Zinfandel enhances any classic BBQ dish. This wine pronounces the smoky char of steaks and ribs while adding rich and jammy fruit notes.

·       Shiraz: Packed with rich berry flavours and tannins, Shiraz wine cuts through fatty textures in heavier cuts of meat like ribs.

·       Malbec: A medium-bodied red that pairs beautifully with burgers. Malbec wines are rich and have the weight needed to pair well without taking the attention off your grilling skills.

·       Merlot: Smooth tannins and plum notes make Merlot an excellent choice for summer staples such as a cheeseburger topped with caramelised onions.

·       Sauvignon Blanc: Crisp and refreshing, Sauvignon Blanc’s citrus and herb notes bring out the delicate flavours in herb-coated grilled chicken.

Vegetarian & Seafood BBQ Wine Pairings

Pairing the right wine with your barbecue dishes elevates every bite. Whether grilling vegetables or seafood, the right bottle enhances flavours and creates a memorable meal. The best kinds of wines to go with different vegetarian and seafood dishes include:

·       Grilled Vegetables and Light Wines: Match flame-kissed veggies with crisp Pinot Grigio or refreshing rosé. These wines support the natural sweetness of charred vegetables without overpowering them.

·       Herb-Seasoned Skewers and Herbal Wines: Pair Mediterranean-style skewers with wines featuring grassy, herbal notes, which are intense and complement the dish's spices.

·       Seafood and Citrus-Forward Whites: Meaty fish like salmon work well with Chardonnay's body and zesty notes. Albariño’s bright acidity and minerality can add a delightful touch to prawns and grilled white fish.

·       Match Weight With Dish: Pair lighter fish with delicate, crisp wines. Heavy seafood suits fuller-bodied options like Chardonnay or even Malbec.

Sweet Sauces and Summer Wine Pairings

Tangy BBQ sauces and spicy rubs create exciting pairing challenges that reward creative thinking. Off-dry Riesling provides just enough sweetness to balance heat whilst maintaining refreshing acidity. The wine's natural fruit flavours complement tomato-based sauces beautifully. Gewürztraminer offers exotic spice notes that work particularly well with Asian-inspired marinades and rubs. Its slight sweetness cools spicy heat without overwhelming the palate. Sweet wines soften spicy heat, and the acidity prevents the combination from becoming cloying.
