Turkey Flat Butchers Block Red
Turkey Flat Butchers Block Red has a deep garnet-purple colour and intense aromas of black pepper and aniseed over rose petals, warm blackberry, blueberry and dark chocolate plus some dusty loam. Rich and full with high acidity and a medium level of fine-grained tannins, it has a long harmonius finish.
On the banks of Tanunda Creek in the heart of Barossa where bush turkeys once roamed, the Silesian settler Johann Fiedler planted the first Shiraz vines in 1843. Highly suited to the terroir, they thrived and in 1865 the land was bought by Gottlieb Ernst Schulz, a butcher of sound reputation. Today the business is still family owned and run by Peter and Christie Schulz who have undertaken extensive viticultural work in their five vineyards. The results are perfect expressions of how Rhone varietals can work in the warm Barossa climate.
The Turkey Flat Butchers Block Red is a traditional Barossa blend made with grapes selected from the Turkey Flat vineyards, including some from the original old vine plantings. It is a blend of Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvédre (Mataro), with the proportions of each variety varying from vintage to vintage.
Like medals at a children's sporting event, when we blend a wine we like each parcel to have recognition; its own chance to feel proud of its contribution to the team. Here, each varietal is vinified & aged individually in French oak barrels before the final blending process. Shiraz adds the generous mouthfeel, Grenache the spice and cherry-like sweetness and Mourvèdre the backbone, savoury edge and fragrance. Balance is crucial, each varietal's contribution is evident yet nothing competes for your attention.
