Maybe not everyone knows that Italian wines occupy 19% of the global market. Italy has a wider selection of wines than anywhere else in the world and uses more than 600 unique indigenous grapes to produce them. In fact, the most famous Italian wines are made from grapes that are grown only in Italy.
Wine consumers do love Italian wines for their diversity of styles, deep-rooted winemaking traditions, food-friendliness and, quite often, great value.
Classic Italian wines include Barolo, Barbaresco, Chianti Classico, Amarone and Nero d’Avola for the reds. Italian wines are also famous for sparkling wines, such as prestigious Franciacorta, fruity dry Prosecco or sweet Asti. In terms of whites, Italian wines are best-known for Pinot Grigio, made from the grape of the same name.
Italian wines are also successfully made from international grapes such Merlot, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. Italian wines made in the mountains are often premium-priced with elegant flavours, while wines grown on flat terrain tend to be easy-to-drink and affordable.
